21st Century Bread: Poems, by Leland Jamieson
What Readers Say:
MY OWN LIFE MIRRORED
“This collection of poetry, for me, is directly connected to real life. It is presented in a personal way I can relate to because I find my own life mirrored in the verses. I like the book because I like what is in it. It feels like genuine poetry, with rhyme that draws me into each story line.”
— C.E.K.H., owner of a wilderness camp, Brevard, North Carolina.
HE LIKES HER!
“Know what I really like about the book? The poet’s closely observed memories, and especially his interest in his wife and her interests. He likes her and it shows! The poem about their first date (‘How Deep the Night!’), remembering standing in line with her and her chatty friend and what they ate at the restaurant is an example.... Others: going to find coffee mug replacements and discovering a creative atmosphere they both appreciated together (‘Potter’).... Observing her when she paints (‘All One Has’, ‘Painter’s Dimension’, ‘Refractory of Rain’).... Observing subtle moments (‘Sweater — with Zipper’). Last but not least, remembering and practicing compassion in a marriage (‘That Elixir’, ‘Knot-Popping Art’).... I love all of these!”
— P.K., account specialist, mother and grandmother of two, Orange, California.
FROST . . . A SENSE OF GLIDING
“For me the poems in 21st Century Bread are awesome and are reminiscent of Robert Frost. They give me a sense of gliding through the air just above all the fray below — as if to quiet all the noise. I like the single poem to a page. It gives me a chance to think that one poem through and through. I like the subject matter. I have a sense, in the case of many poems, that I have been there too.”
— L.K.M., retired computer software consultant, Middletown, Connecticut.
INSPIRED TO RHYME
“My favorite poem was one from boyhood
Hopping and stopping a departing train
The ones about nature were also good
Pileated woodpeckers, acid rain
That dying dog whose "brown eyes lost their clown"
And the coda for readers and writers
Hints for getting our intimations down
On paper arranged in ways that delight us....
Among other things I enjoyed were the cover’s simplicity and color, which make it a stand-out on a coffee table or wherever I put it among other books when I set it aside. The epigraphs for many of the poems helped clarify the settings, which I appreciated. The titles in the Table of Contents intrigued me and not only gave me a sense of the subjects covered but drew me in to the mosaic of images they made — and which the poems bore out.”
— K.C.I., chemist, naturalist, poet, Garret Park, Maryland.
